How Spending Shares Change With Family Size
The percentages in this calculator follow a pattern you see in real household budgets. Food gets a bigger share as the household grows, because the grocery bill scales with the number of people. Housing share trends lower per household as more people share the same rent or mortgage. Transportation, savings, and other spending stay relatively flat as a share of income.
The shares are qualitative reference points, not a spending law. Your rent, your area, and your savings goals will push the numbers around. Use them to spot where your family is well inside or far outside the common pattern, then adjust deliberately.
| Household Size | Housing | Food | Transport | Savings | Other |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 person | 30% | 12% | 12% | 15% | 31% |
| 2 people | 28% | 13% | 13% | 14% | 32% |
| 3 people | 26% | 15% | 13% | 13% | 33% |
| 4 people | 24% | 17% | 13% | 12% | 34% |
| 5 people | 23% | 19% | 12% | 11% | 35% |
| 6 or more | 22% | 20% | 12% | 10% | 36% |
Turning the Shares Into a Family Budget
Start with three months of real spending, not a guess. Export your bank and credit card transactions and bucket every dollar into housing, food, transport, savings, and other. Compare your actual shares to the reference table to see which category is running hot.
Then set your own numbers, not the table's. A family in a high cost city may run housing at 35% and compensate by holding transport to 8%. The point of the exercise is a conscious trade off, not a perfect match to a national average.
Saving as a Family
The savings share shrinks as a household grows, so families have to protect it deliberately. Automate transfers for the day pay arrives, before the money can be spent. Fund the accounts with the best tax treatment first.
In 2026 a family can move a large share of income into tax advantaged accounts: $24,500 into a 401(k), $7,500 into each spouse's IRA, and $8,700 into a family HSA. On a combined $120,000 of gross income, funding all of that is just over 40% of earnings directed to savings before a dollar goes to a taxable account.
