Understanding Tax Brackets
A common misconception: if you're in the 22% bracket, ALL your income is taxed at 22%. This is wrong.
The US has a progressive tax system: your income is taxed in layers. The first $11,650 of taxable income is taxed at 10%, the next layer ($11,651-47,150) at 12%, and so on. Only the portion within each bracket is taxed at that bracket's rate.
This calculator shows the correct calculation. You'll see that your effective tax rate is always lower than your marginal rate — often significantly.
| Taxable Income Range | Tax Rate | Tax On This Bracket |
|---|---|---|
| $0 – $11,650 | 10% | 10% of income in this range |
| $11,651 – $47,150 | 12% | 12% of income in this range |
| $47,151 – $100,525 | 22% | 22% of income in this range |
| $100,526 – $191,950 | 24% | 24% of income in this range |
| $191,951 – $243,725 | 32% | 32% of income in this range |
| $243,726 – $609,350 | 35% | 35% of income in this range |
| $609,351+ | 37% | 37% of income in this range |
Why Tax Brackets Matter for FIRE
Understanding tax brackets is critical for FIRE planning:
